Anna's 8th birthday, 9th Christmas
Anna celebrated her eighth birthday and ninth Christmas on Monday after dinner at Baba and Grandad’s. The decoration for her birthday cake and also for her birthday card were Anna’s drawing of a Winter scene using a Crayola software program. Among her Christmas gifts were an interactive puppy named Lucky who responds to voice commands and an interactive Princess doll who does dance movements to imitate movements by Anna.
Erin and Kerin got maching tops
Erin and Anna celebrated Christmas by opening their presents after dinner at Baba and Grandad’s. Later they went to visit Grandmother Gabelman. Gifts were under a Christmas crib which is almost a half-century old. Erin and her American Girl doll Kerin got matching tops from Baba and Grandad.

They just couldn't let go
Anna gets ready to trapeze over a huge pile of limbs from an old Red Delicious apple tree in the backyard of Baba and Grandad’s while Erin climbs what is left of the old tree after Eric Poston and Mike Kowal started taking it down on Saturday, August 26. A chain saw will take care of what is left standing and a chipper will grind up the limbs that were removed. The girls had to have one last fling Sunday. They will miss the many hours spent swinging on a swing that hung from the old tree. This tree and a Macintosh apple tree, still standing, were planted in 1982 with money from a gift to Baba and Grandad on their 25th wedding anniversary from Mary and Pio Chini, Baba’s sister and brother-in-law who are both deceased.

Train ride through the park
A Cuyahoga Valley National Park ranger shows Anna and Erin a beaver pelt during their train ride on Sunday, August 13, on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad. The girls with Baba and Grandad left the Northside Station in Akron at 1:15 p.m. for a trip to Peninsula and back which took an hour and 45 minutes. The railroad is one of the oldest, longest and most scenic tourist excursion railways in the country. It follows along the towpath trail of the Ohio Canal. The tracks reach 51 miles south form Independence passing through the 33,000 acre national park to Akron and Canton. The tracks were recorded in the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
Our visit to Waterworks Park.
Although we go swimming a number of places--mostly the Falls Natatorium--we always spend one afternoon each Summer at Waterworks Park in Munroe Falls to go down the slides, swim and take a leisurely trip on the Lazy River. This year it was on Tuesday, August 8. Erin is in the front of the double tube and Anna in the back. Anna took swimming lessons at the Natatorium in July. Both girls are becoming better swimmers each time we go.

Blowing out the birthday candles
It took a little bit of huffing and puffing for Erin to blow out the 11 sparkler candles on this cake baked by Mom. The candles actually sparkled like Fourth of July sparklers. The cake and ice cream was served for a party at Baba and Grandad's,
Erin got the American Girl doll she is holding from Mom and Dad and a heart-shaped locket engraved with ERIN and the date from Baba and Grandad. There were a number of other gifts of course.

Erin celebrates 11th birthday
This is a new photo to celebrate Erin Liggett's eleventh birthday. She is now 4 feet, 11 1/4 inches tall and that is just three-fourths of an inch from the top of the growth chart Grandad keeps for Erin and sister Anna. Next year Erin will be off the chart. We went toy shopping on Sunday and stopped at Swenson's in Montrose. Baba baked a cake and more gifts will be opened after Anna's swimming lesson Tuesday evening. The family will go to Pittsburgh Zoo on Wednesday.

Let us love one another
A new chapter of diocesan leadership begins
The Most Reverend Richard G. Lennon became the tenth Bishop of the Diocese of Cleveland during his solemn rite of installation which began at 3 p.m. and concluded at 5:45 p.m. Monday, May 15, 2006, in the Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist.
More than 1,200 invited guests filled the 158 year-old Cathedral located at E. 9th and Superior Avenue in downtown Cleveland.
Catholic leadership in attendance from outside the Diocese of Cleveland included: His Eminence Sean Patrick Cardinal O’Malley, O.F.M., Cap., Archbishop of Boston; His Eminence William Cardinal Keeler, Archbishop of Baltimore; The Most Reverend Pietro Sambi, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States; and The Most Reverend Daniel E. Pilarczyk, Archbishop of Cincinnati. In
addition, some 30 other visiting Bishops and still other visiting priests and deacons from dioceses around the U.S. were in attendance.
Local Catholic leadership included the Bishops of Cleveland. The Most Reverend Anthony M. Pilla, Bishop-Emeritus of Cleveland; The Most Reverend A. Edward Pevec, Retired Auxiliary Bishop of Cleveland; The Most Reverend A. James Quinn, Auxiliary Bishop of Cleveland; The Most Reverend Roger W. Gries, O.S.B., Auxiliary Bishop of Cleveland; and The Most Reverend Martin J. Amos, Auxiliary Bishop of Cleveland. Also in attendance were many of the priests and deacons of the Cleveland diocese.
Archbishop Daniel E. Pilarczyk, who served as the installing prelate, opened the liturgy with the sign of the cross and greeting. Archbishop Pietro Sambi then read the letter of appointment from His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI. The Papal letter was then given to Bishop Lennon.
A long sustained applause came when Bishop Lennon spoke about Bishop-Emeritus Pilla. “I want to say a very special word of recognition and an expression of personal gratitude to Bishop Anthony Pilla, for his over 25 years of Episcopal leadership in this great Diocese of Cleveland.”

Thanks from Erin's World
Special Note to Uncle Don and Aunt Mary Alice:
Anna and I want to thank you for all the nice comments.
We wish you could have been here for Mass last First Friday at St. Paul. Anna’s class was assigned to assist at Mass. Anna took up the hosts on the paten and I volunteered to read the epistle. I led the procession to the altar and carried the sacramentary. We were both proud because Mom and Dad and Baba and Grandad were all at the Mass. I also was altar server for the 9 a.m. Mass on Sunday and got to ring the bell for the elevation.
Watch out for Alberto!
Love,
Erin

Yes it was a great Easter
It was a great Easter for Erin and Anna Liggett. It started with Mass with Mom and Dad at St. Paul. It was beautiful with all the lighted candles. We went to Baba and Grandad's for lunch at noon on Easter Sunday. The trees in the few days before Christmas began to leaf out and Grandad was surprised to see the rhodobndendrum had bloomed in time for Easter. Anna and Erin posed for a picture in front of it with new singing Easter bunnies they got along with full Easter baskets. In the afternoon we went with Bemaw to Aunt Cathy and Uncle Gil's and had the traditional Easter egg hunt. And the best part is still to come--a whole holiday week from school.

Welcoming our new Bishop
All students at St. Paul School join me in welcoming our new bishop, the Most Reverend Richard Gerard Lennon.
No, of course, we have not met the new Bishop and, no, we were not in Cleveland to see him, but thought it would be nice to post this information as a way of welcoming him.
Pope Benedict XVI on Tuesday, April 4, 2006 announced the selection of The Most Reverend Richard Gerard Lennon, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Boston to be the tenth Bishop of the Diocese of Cleveland.
The Most Reverend Anthony Michael Pilla welcomed and introduced Bishop-Designate Lennon at a 9:30 a.m. news conference held on Cathedral Square in downtown Cleveland . Bishop Lennon, currently the Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia of the Archdiocese of Boston, will be installed as the new Bishop of Cleveland on Monday, May 15, at 3 p.m. in the Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist, E.Ninth & Superior Avenue, Cleveland.
Born 59 years ago in Arlington, Massachusetts, Bishop-Designate Lennon graduated from Catholic High School and then attended Boston College before entering St. John's Seminary in Brighton, Massachusetts where he received an M.A. in Church History and M.TH. in Sacramental Theology. He was ordained to the priesthood in May, 1973 and served in a variety of posts including parish priest, Fire Department Chaplain (sometimes participating as a firefighter), as Assistant for Canonical Affairs, and Rector of St. John's Seminary. He was ordained as an Auxiliary Bishop in the Archdiocese of Boston on September 14, 2001.
The Most Rev. Anthony M. Pilla will complete his tenure as the longest serving Bishop in diocesan history, having celebrated his 25th anniversary this past January. Upon his retirement, Bishop Pilla will take a sabbatical to reflect and discern, as he considers several opportunities to continue in ministry. Bishop Pilla plans to reside in greater Cleveland.
For a photo of the press conference and more stories, you can visit Baba’s family blog at http://smolak.blogspot.com

Take it to the cross
Members of St. Paul Parish in Akron were invited during the 2006 Lenten season to “nail” any burden, illness or struggle in their faith to a wooden cross placed in the narthex of the church. “Our hope is that by bringing triublations to Our Lord, He will bring about a transformation in our lives so that something good will result from our suffering,” a notice in the church bulletin said.

Build-A-Bear party for Anna
Anna Liggett was joined by 11 of her friends for a Build-A-Bear birthday party at Summit Mall on Sunday, February 19. Girls with their costumed bears included Catherine Rardin in front and in back (from left) Anna Liggett, Michele Bojo, Lisa Rardin and Erin Liggett. Because she was born on Christmas Day, the family did not want her birthday to be forgotten. Not likely. So far, she has has been given at least three birthday parties since Christmas. Anna is in the first grade at St. Paul and Erin is in the fifth grade. Their parents are Tom and Sue Liggett
